The that the last thing you want to do is ruin your jewelry by cleaning it the wrong way. Here are some helpful hints to help maintain the original look and feel of your jewelry:
~ Be careful about what products touch your jewelry. Spray your perfumes and hairspray prior to putting on your jewelry, not after. Your jewelry should not come in contact with heavy lotions, creams or chemicals.
~ Sterling silver jewelry will eventually tarnish as a natural process. Tarnishing occurs when light and oxygen mix together and oxidizes the silver. To reduce the amount of tarnish, store your jewelry in airtight bags (like ziplock) in a closed jewelry case.
~ When your jewelry does need cleaning, do not use jewelry cleaner as the chemicals in those could strip the luster, shine and general makeup of the crystals, beads and stones in your pieces.
~ For best results, use a clean 100% cotton cloth or a Silver Jewelry Polishing Cloth, such as Connoisseurs. This has a white cloth that is good for removing dirt or tarnish, as well as a pink cloth that shines your jewelry even more.
~ Never use paper towels or other coarse fabrics or cloths as these can put fine scratches in your jewelry that would need to be buffed out.
~ To clean glass beads or semi-precious stones, use a mild combination of soap and water.
~ NEVER roll on your bracelets, anklets or necklaces. All beaded jewelry is placed on a wire that allows for a certain amount of movement and strength of hold; however, rolling or tugging them in any way will loosen this holding strength and could compromise the integrity of the jewelry. This could cause your jewelry to need restringing or could possibly break the jewelry altogether. Remember jewelry can last forever if properly cared for.
~ Always store your jewelry in a safe place with compartments or dividers between the storage spaces. This keeps the jewelry from rubbing against each other, possibly damaging stones in the process. Be sure these compartments have soft sides so that the compartment itself does not scratch your jewelry.
~ Last, but not least, to help minimize tarnishing as well as the need for frequent cleanings, place anti-tarnish strips designated for jewelry within your jewelry case or ziplock bag, close to your silver pieces. Replacing these periodically will help ensure that your sterling silver jewelry retains the original shine and luster and decreases any or all of the tarnishing that would naturally occur. Look for this to be available on this site soon.
